Avascular necrosis is a medical condition in which the blood supply to a bone is reduced or completely stopped. Because bones need a constant supply of blood to stay healthy, this lack of circulation causes bone tissue to weaken and gradually die. When untreated, the affected bone can collapse, leading to joint damage and long term disability.
